Field Work
Pallet Stairs
A utility stair build created during a hang gliding trip near Eatonia, Saskatchewan, using reclaimed pallets and whatever was on hand to get the job done right.

We were out doing some truck-based hang gliding near Eatonia, Saskatchewan, and one of the pilot’s family members, who lives there and runs a bee apiary, was helping us with all the logistics of running the flying competition. As not all days are flyable, we shifted to a “work bee day” to help out around the apiary. My task was to build a set of stairs to help people get in and out of the warehouse. With no budget and no materials to speak of, I scrounged up a few pallets, a saw, and some nails to fabricate a solid set of utility stairs.
The Work Bee
Not every project starts with a plan.
Some start with people.
We were out near Eatonia, Saskatchewan
running a truck-based hang gliding competition.
Flying depends on the weather.
And not every day is flyable.
So when the wind didn’t cooperate,
we did what people used to do more often.
We worked.
One of the pilots had family in the area
they ran a bee apiary and were helping us manage the logistics of the event.
To return the favour, we organized a work bee.
No drawings. No materials list.
Just what was on hand.
A stack of pallets.
Some tools.
A job that needed doing.
We built a set of stairs, simple, solid, and functional.
Nothing fancy. Just right.
Because sometimes good building isn’t about perfection.
It’s about understanding materials, working with what you have,
and getting it done properly.
Skill shows up when there’s no plan.
Craft shows up when it still gets done right.
