Drum Stand
A custom-built drum stand inspired by architecture, designed to hold rhythm both structurally and visually.

I used to play African-style drumming a while ago, and a friend asked if I could build a dunun stand. It needed to hold three different-sized drums, with the player standing in front to play the base rhythm. It was a pretty specific ask, but something I was interested in figuring out.
I had just come back from a swim meet in Montreal and was really taken by the Olympic Stadium built for the 1976 Summer Olympics. The shape of the tower stuck with me. I managed to mimic that form and tweak it to fit the drums properly. Built it all from scratch, and it came together nicely in the end.
Rhythm in Form
Good design doesn’t start with wood.
It starts with an idea.
I used to play African drums
and a friend asked if I could build a stand for a dunun set.
Three drums. Different sizes.
Played standing, forming the foundation of the rhythm.
The function was clear.
But the form needed something more.
Not long before, I had been in Montreal at a swim meet
and spent time around the Olympic Stadium.
There’s a presence to that structure.
The tower. The angle. The tension in the form.
That shape stayed with me.
Back in the shop, I started working it into the design
adjusting proportions, refining the lines,
until it worked not just visually, but structurally.
Everything built from scratch.
The result is a stand that holds the drums properly,
but also carries a sense of movement
something that reflects the music itself.
Structure can hold weight.
Design can carry rhythm.
